Trimac Eddy is a massive sweeping back eddy southeast of Trail and is a favourite destination for local anglers. This large eddy is located just past Trimac Transportation and Gravel Pit Road. Park at pullout just past the Teck property and follow the walking trail down to the river. The eddy is named after the local trucking company -Trimac Transportation. Trimac operations are perched on the hill overlooking the eddy and helps make this fishing hole very easy to find.
This unique section of the Columbia is created by a narrowing of the river that makes a sharp left turn, opens up, then swirls back upon itself.
The ‘spot’ is a favourite destination for bottom bouncers -particularly in winter. Anglers head down a path through a stand of conifers to the rocky beach where anglers often build a fire and roast sausages and smokies while closely watching their three-way rigs for any signs of a bite.
There is roughly 100 metres of fishing room, and much of it is protected from the wind and elements. Spin casting and bottom bouncing with a three-way rig tipped with worm or maggot is the most popular method in the winter months.
On the other side of the river is the Fort Shepherd Conservancy Area that provides habitat for grazing elk, whitetail and mule deer. Moose are also common visitors, and mountain goats can also be seen perched precariously on the opposing mountain side.
The combination of grasslands, dry forests, cliffs, caves, wildlife, trees, and dry rocky slopes provides excellent habitat for species-at-risk. Fourteen species-at-risk have been confirmed in the Fort Shepherd Conservancy Area and another sixteen species are likely inhabitants. The wildlife viewing and excellent fishing are why this is a very popular spot.
