We started our drift around 11:30. It was nice and calm, but we were really socked in so we knew we were in for rain. We got into a few fish right off the bat on a dry fly. We pulled a rainbow to the boat, lost a few, and my client hooked into one really nice rainbow, but he got pretty excited by the big hit and snapped it off. About an hour into the trip it began to rain pretty hard and the fishing got really tough. We switched to sink line pulling streamers and hooked into a walleye.
Even though the fishing was not as good as usual and it rained a lot we were prepared for the weather and still had a great time. My father and son guests were both beginner fly fishers from Ontario. This was the first time they had fished together in many years, so they were keen to go out despite the bleak weather forecast. I helped them brush up on their casting skills and we saw 6-7 otters, a sturgeon, a couple black bears, some heron, eagles, and an osprey catch a fish. The wildlife and scenery were a big hit with my guests. They told me they really enjoyed the drift and are looking forward to coming back next year.
