It doesn’t matter what weather Mother Nature brings, rain, sunshine, snow, or sleet you can always find Lyle McLellan practicing his craft on the Columbia River.
McLellan took up the art of Spey casting just over a year ago, thanks to an introduction by world-class spey caster and Trail resident Bruce Kruk. (Click here for Trail Times story on Bruce Kruk)
His dedication has been nothing short of astounding, as every day McLellan heads down to the Gyro Park boat launch in Trail, sets up his 15-foot Gael Force Spey rod and begins throwing a generous amount of string onto the mighty Columbia.
On this day, a winter storm warning had been broadcast all over the West Kootenay, but Lyle was still out there, knee deep in the water in the midst of a blizzard, methodically practicing his D-loop.
His enthusiasm is contagious, and as McLellan says, “I’d rather cast than catch fish, for me this is the best thing I’ve ever done.”
